WebYeah the redesigns got it right. Toothless got more anthropomorphic over time (something the lead artists of the first movie tried very hard and were very vocal about avoiding), but httyd1 did a good job of displaying his feral and fearsome nature when it needed to be shown. I think so many of us forget it, but he was scary in the very beginning of httyd1.
